The inaugural WA Women in Forest and Timber Network International Women’s Day event was a successful gathering of industry professionals aimed at fostering connections and supporting a good cause.

Organised with dedication and passion by Shelena Serrano (Vekta), Jacqueline Goodwin & Jennifer van der Bussche (AG Trusses), Robyn Perkin (Pryda), Kat Welsh & myself (FTMA), the event was a testament to the power of collaboration and initiative within the Forest & Wood Products industry.

Held at Aloft Perth, the afternoon provided a relaxed environment where attendees could network, share experiences, and participate in meaningful discussions. A key highlight was the panel discussion led I was fortunate to chair, featuring speakers Shelena Serrano (Vekta Automation), Julie Pelliciari (Wespine), Adele Farina (FIFWA), and Jacqueline Goodwin (AG Trusses). These women shared their personal experiences and challenges working in a traditionally male-dominated industry, industry and their advice about what they’d share with their 16-year-old selves were equal parts humorous, inspiring, and eye-opening.

Adding to the spirit of the day was the incredible Natalie Sangalli, CEO of Dress for Success Western Australia. Her presentation provided a poignant reminder of the challenges many women face and the importance of lifting each other up. From offering professional attire for job interviews to boosting confidence in re-entering the workforce, Dress for Success embodies the very essence of empowerment—a fitting charity to benefit from such a remarkable event.

Between heartfelt speeches, thought-provoking discussions, and the light-hearted fun of the photo booth, the event had everyone smiling and connecting. By the end of the afternoon, delegates who started the day as strangers had exchanged countless ideas, stories, and contact information, forming what promises to be the beginning of new and meaningful networks.

The event was made possible through the support of sponsors including Vekta, FTMA Australia, Wesbeam, Staxa (Wespine), AG Trusses, Pryda, and Multinail. The generosity of these sponsors ensured the day ran smoothly and contributed to raising funds for Dress for Success. A Luxury Escape Travel Voucher door prize, donated by MiTek, and items for a silent auction were additional highlights that engaged attendees while supporting the cause.

At its core, the event provided an opportunity to connect, share knowledge, and lay the groundwork for future initiatives, including the establishment of a WA branch of the Women in Forest and Timber Network. The willingness of attendees to volunteer their time and efforts is a promising step forward for the industry.

Perhaps one of the most exciting outcomes was the formation of a dedicated group of volunteers eager to help build the WA arm of the Women in Forest and Timber Network. With their drive and enthusiasm, we can only imagine the future initiatives and events that will continue to champion women in this industry.

This event didn’t just mark International Women’s Day—it celebrated the progress made, highlighted the work left to do, and inspired everyone present to accelerate action toward a more inclusive, innovative, and connected future. And, of course, it did so while raising vital funds for Dress for Success, ensuring the impact would ripple far beyond that one extraordinary afternoon.
