What You Need To Know About – Code of Practice – Fire Retardant Coatings

Welcome back for the October edition of Design Guides That Matter #10. Where we are showcasing the incredible technical design guides that make up the FREE resources produced by WoodSolutions. For more general information on the design guides, January’s FTMA article has the main insight into what a great resource WoodSolutions has available.

This month we’re focusing on:

Code of Practice – Fire Retardant Coatings

(45th in the series of guides)

When most people think of wood or timber and its ability to perform, for longevity and for safety, the question mark of fire hazards undoubtedly comes up possibly as the primary concern with timber. Timber is inherently flammable, which poses potential risks in construction. In Australia, building regulations are stringent when it comes to fire safety. But timber does not have to be a weak link when it comes to fire. Modern methods and solutions provide a convenient answer to keep locking in the carbon, and maintain a fire resistant solution – whilst complying with Australian building codes.

This particular guide, is one of part of a series that when put all together, is evidencing that superior housing can be achieved with the core focus being timber engineered and built.

This guide goes into the differing codes to consider, and was last updated in 2020.

‘In order to comply with the NCC it must be demonstrated that the Governing Requirements of the NCC and the Performance Requirements have been satisfied. The Governing Requirements of the NCC are documented in Section A of the NCC and provide rules and instructions for using and complying with the NCC including:

  • Interpreting the NCC
  • Complying with the NCC
  • Application of the NCC in States and Territories
  • Applying documents referenced in the NCC
  • Documenting the suitability of the design, construction and/or use of materials to comply with the NCC
  • Classifying buildings by their characteristics and intended use.’

This guide puts forward every consideration that is needed from the design phase, the construction, through to the future maintenance of fire-retardant methods, and conditions that will impact durability. It also provides information on fire testing safety research in line with the NCC. When we’re involved in the construction of a property, there has to be forward thinking and responsibilities for the ongoing safety and durability of whatever we build, and this guide takes us through the on-going factors that must be factored in.

We highly recommend these resources, instantly at your fingertips, and crafted by experts in this field. Please get onto it! Make the most of the abundance of combined knowledge.

It’s free and easy to register an account with WoodSolutions and then the design guides are also free to access after that. The library is constantly being added to, updated, and are often discussed in WoodSolutions’ webinars, blogs and social media posts.
