Australian Building Codes Board Release New Handbook on Modern Methods of Construction

In November, the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) released a new handbook – Modern Methods of Construction.

This publication has come about following building ministers agreeing in March 2024, that MMC are a potential way forward for Australia to begin delivering on its pledge of 1.2 million new homes over the next 5 years and acknowledging ‘the significant potential of MMC to help address Australia’s housing supply shortfall.’

‘This handbook has been developed to increase the understanding and effectiveness of existing building standards and regulations at the direction of Ministers and to respond to government and industry requests for guidance on achieving NCC compliance in buildings that use MMC. It answers questions about determining evidence to support compliance and common NCC compliance risk areas.’ (Modern Methods of Construction handbook).

The book has been written with contributions from building 4.0 crc, a research initiative co-funded by the Australian Government.

Given that MMC is now on the lips of most politicians involved in housing, it begs the question how can the industry take on more opportunities in line with the National Construction Codes. The newest handbook, goes into details about the NCC legal requirements and gives concise information regarding MMC builds, and complying the codes.
