The FTMA Australia National Conference dates are locked in, and, for the first time in a decade we are bringing the conference back to Victoria.

Ensuring northerners don’t freeze, we have booked the conference for Monday 18 & Tuesday 19 March 2024.

The theme for the 2024 National Conference’s is Looking Outside the Triangle, as we want to look at more than just trusses. We want to explore what your company’s true value is, future markets and coping mechanisms to help businesses through tough times.

I’m thrilled to announce that our keynote speaker has been booked and delegates will have the privilege of listening to Tim Jarvis, a British-Australian environmental explorer, adventurer, climber, author and documentary filmmaker, with master’s qualifications in environmental science and environmental law.

Jarvis is considered an authority on Shackleton and the leadership style Shackleton espoused. I followed the journey in 2013 voyage which followed in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton’s journey from 1914. A local acquaintance from Healesville, Paul Larsen, joined him on the tour, so we watched on eagerly.

I was astounded by Shackleton’s leadership. If you google Shackleton you will find quotes such as: Shackleton embodied a purposeful leadership style. He was the very embodiment of adaptive leadership. Adapting to every new challenge to save the crew. He was able to distinguish between the essential, and what was peripheral.

Small businesses are currently going through challenging times. Whilst you’re fortunate not to be stuck at sea in the icy cold, many of you are struggling to keep on top of the ever-changing industrial relations and workplace safety landscape.

I asked Tim to join us and talk about adaptive leadership, giving members tools to continue to guide their teams through tough times. If you’d like to see some of Tim’s videos, please visit Tim Jarvis | Adventurer, Environmental Scientist.

The Conference itself will be held at the newly renovated Geelong Arts Centre. The centre has undergone extensive renovations, and even though we haven’t been able to see it firsthand, we are excited about the venue.

Our two accommodation venues are the newly built Holiday Inn, directly across the road, and the new Quest Apartments in Geelong, also newly built. Both of these accommodation venues, along with the Arts Centre will be open next month.

Our Gala dinner will be held at the home of the Geelong Cats, GMBHA Stadium, where we will present the Clive Martella Service to Industry Award along with new awards being introduced.

As usual, we will have our Red Activities Day the day before, on Monday 18 March, along with the official Icebreaker, and this year following the conference, we will be hosting a tour to AKD Softwoods in Colac, as well as other options.

The exciting change for this event, is instead of having a large trade exhibit, as we have done for many years, we are hosting an Art Exhibition featuring artwork from our valued partners.

We may also explore opportunities for delegates with artistic skills who may like to show off their artwork.

We are finalising the finer details for the events, and working hard to keep our prices low and will have registrations open by the end of August.
